VMDK disk files are used with VMware to store the data or file structure of your virtual machines. If you have a VMDK file and no VM to open it or do not have VMware Workstation or Player installed on your computer, then there is still a way to open the VMDK file or mount it on your computer as a drive with its own drive letter. Once you do this, you can then access the files and folders contained within the VMDK file and even copy them to your computer. Here is the download link for 7-Zip. 🤍 Here is the link for OSFMount. 🤍 Check out our book (VMware Workstation Made Easy) that is designed to take your virtualization skills to the next level! 🤍 #vmwareworkstation #vmware

👍 Watch how to create a VMWare Workstation virtual machine, and how to recover data from a virtual disk of such machine after a failure or when the virtual machine can’t start. Watch another video by our channel to see clean installation of Windows: 🤍 In this video, I want to show you one trick, just in case if for some reason your virtual machine is no longer working, and there are important files on its disks. I will show you how to recover them. Though VMware Workstation is a virtual machine, real data can be saved there. Content: 0:00 - Intro; 0:19 - Creating a VMWare virtual machine 0:56 - Configuration type normal 3:35 - Running a virtual machine 5:31 - Connecting to VMware Workstation 6:01 - Recovering data from a virtual machine Recovering Data Of a VMware Virtual Machine: 🤍 As we have already said, all files stored in virtual machine disks are located in .vmdk files of the virtual disk. Hetman Partition Recovery, the program for hard disk data recovery, has the function of mounting virtual disks and recovering data from such disks. You can download Hetman Partition Recovery here: 🤍 In order to get access to virtual machine files: 1. Run Hetman Partition Recovery and mount the virtual machine disk. If there are several of them, you can mount them all at once or one by one. To mount a virtual disk with the help of Hetman Partition Recovery, click on Mount Disk in the quick access menu of the program. As a result, the window of choosing a virtual disk will open. Go to the folder containing the virtual machine and choose the necessary .vmdk file. Open 2. As you do that, the section “Mounted Disks” containing the list of mounted virtual disks will appear in the window, where all disks found by the application are shown. If you mount several disks, you will see the entire disk list there. 3. Scan the disk with the application by double-clicking on the disk in the disk manager. 4. After the analysis, the application will show the directory tree of the scanned disk. 5. Find and recover the necessary files to a convenient location in your main operating system. By the way, you can use this method to move files from a virtual machine disk to the main operating system. That is all for now.

KB 1002511 How to recreate a missing Virtual Machine Disk Descriptor File (VMDK) This video demonstrates how to recreate a missing virtual machine disk descriptor .vmdk file. Note: VMware recommends to attempt to restore the missing descriptor file from backups if possible. If this is not possible, proceed with recreating the VMDK file. To create a virtual machine disk descriptor file (VMDK): - Identify the size of the flat file in bytes. - Create a new blank virtual disk that is the same size as the original. This serves as a baseline example that is modified in later steps. - Rename the descriptor file (also referred to as a header file) of the newly-created disk to match the name of the original virtual disk. - Modify the contents of the renamed descriptor file to reference the flat file. - Remove the leftover temporary flat file of the newly-created disk, as it is not required. This procedure will not work on virtual disks configured with a Para-virtualized SCSI controller in the virtual machine For additional information, see 🤍

For a test I shut down my VMware ESXi. My VM was saved in the VMware ESXi Database. After restoring my VMware ESXi I added the existing VM from the Database. From the beginning, root has no password. After access to VMWare, set up a new password. FYI: This is a test environment with an unsupported server and when this server’s power is off / shutdown all passwords and setting will be gone. But VM will be saved in the HDD.

How easy is it to start encrypting virtual machine disk files in VMware ESXi? Scary easy. In the video we show how you can use simple built-in commands in VMware ESXi to power VMs off, create a key file for encryption, and then begin encrypting files on the ESXi datastore. ESXi contains all the OpenSSL commands needed in-the-box to easily build ESXi ransomware that takes advantage of the native tools. It helps to show the need to secure your ESXi hosts properly.
