The Junghans Max Bill has been a staple of my collection for years because of it's iconic design and timeless charm. I first noticed Sternglas on kickstarter and thought the Naos was a striking modern Bauhaus interpretation. So here I put the two side by side. This iconic timepiece has always had my attention but the previous lack of a sapphire crystal option and questions about the real-life size, scale, and proportions, kept me from pulling the trigger. We are of course talking about the Max Bill collection designed by the legendary Artist himself back in the early 60s. Today I review the unique and highly influential watch, a brief history of the Swiss designer and discuss why my favourite of the Max Bill collection is this automatic no-date version with the anthracite dial (ref. 027/3401.00). Gli orologi di Junghans diventano il simbolo della misurazione del tempo accessibili a tutti, ottenendo un grande riconoscimento in tutto il mondo. Nel 1903 presso Junghans lavoravano 3.000 collaboratori. A quell’epoca si vendevano 3 milioni di orologi all’anno e Junghans era la fabbrica di orologi più grande del mondo.

Under the hood you will find the mechanical handwinding movement Junghans Cal. J815.1, which is based on the Peseux 7001. This is one of the thinnest mechanical movements in the price class (and several price classes above this watch), which means the watch is only 7.3mm thick, despite the domed glass. The glass is plexiglass with a Sacrilan coating. This coating helps protect the otherwise relatively vulnerable plexiglass against scratches. The case has a durable yellow gold PVD coating. The Meister Handaufzug has a small seconds hand and nicely polished hands. Due to the powerful design the watch has great wrist presence, despite having a sensible 37.7mm diameter.
